It sure makes me happy to see Kim’s bright, enthusiastic face when I get to the rink. She specializes in teaching moves in the field and I’m working with her on my juvenile moves. And look at the ice we get while the kids are in school. It’s a public session, but a lightly skated one. After she temporarily retired and then came back, I especially appreciate the chance to work together, even more now that Ty’s left.
My test date keeps getting pushed into the future. Kim had been talking about testing along the lines of “well, it’s probably time to get it out there and get some feedback.” Nothing like, “Hey, you’re gonna crush this, let’s get this done.” I’d like to hear a skating coach say that some day. Ha.
Most recently we’d been talking about testing in November. My eight-step mohawk sequence is a lot better, several people have told me that. I’ve put in a whole lot of time on the outside mohawk: getting my feet closer before the step, keeping my upper body quiet, relaxing my free foot before I step down so my toe picks don’t scratch the ice as much.
The back power threes, though, aren’t ready, and the forward inside double threes are iffy too. Now we’re considering February. I’m planning to go to Adult Sectionals in March, so not sure how that plan is really going to work out.
When Kim advised me against testing in November she told me a couple of times that she was proud of me for all the progress I’ve made. I told my husband that, and noted that she was probably really trying to make sure I wouldn’t get discouraged. My husband said, maybe she actually is proud of you. Hmm. Hadn’t thought of that one.

I know you can do it, Mary! Believe in yourself, because we all believe in you. 🙂

Thanks Eva! I hope you are right and I can make enough progress on those back power threes (and other things).
I think coaches rarely talk that way because judging for moves in the field is so tough. They don’t want you to get your hopes up. That said, I know you’re up to the task, Mary! Work on those sequences and go crush them!

I know you are right, Marcia, I was just having a little bit of fun imagining something else. That would be amazing to know these skills well enough to go into the test really confident. But probably that would mean I was a higher level skater in moves in juvenile.
All the best! Sounds like a great challenge ahead of you.

Been working on it for quite a while but yes, still lots to learn.
I hope you will post some photos of you crushing that test!! Good luck

Oh I hope so too! Might be a while though, LOL.
Good luck with your testing! Sounds intense!

Thanks. Mainly it’s just very picky, the judges want everything just so.
I’m sure she’s very proud of you. Good luck with all of this. Exciting and challenging times ahead!

Thanks. It will probably still take a while but I hope to get it eventually.
How great that you can get ice time to practice your moves. I’m sure that’s half the battle! Looking forward to the recap of your progress!

That’s perceptive of you. It’s definitely very helpful, and for some of the moves, necessary, to have such uncrowded ice to practice on. Thanks, I’ll try to post a progress video sometime.
I know coach Kim must be proud of you, because coaches never say things like that just for encouragement–mine might toss off a casual “good job” but the “I’m proud of you” has to be earned!!! Practice, practice, practice. Then crush!

Kim is a very positive coach but you’re right, that saying is not part of her usual encouragement repertoire. Luckily I do still want to practice these moves. I would just love to have a good test.
I would have such performance anxiety. I’m sure your coach is proud of you and just wants to do what’s best for you with the timing.

Performance anxiety can definitely be a problem. I prefer skating to music. On the moves tests you are out there in the quiet with the three judges watching and writing notes. Also, the tests are kind of long. I’m sure Kim wants me to test when I have a decent chance of passing and not before.
Being met by somebody who is wearing a huge smile on their face always helps to calm my nerves when my stress is high, and Kim certainly had a great smile on her face. Best of luck to you!

Thanks Kathryn! I hope she will have the same smile on test morning.
She must be very proud of you! This all so exciting!!
Thanks Angela!
